In Varethia, memory is currency, and Elara has lost all of hers. She wakes in a frozen cell with iron at her wrists and no idea of her own name. Beyond the bars sits a tall man in black and gold, watching her with unreadable patience. They call him the Soul-Thief. He serves the Quorum, and his task is to unlock her mind.

Three years ago the old kingdom burned. The Quorum took the throne, Chancellor Vane took power, and the kingdom's last heir vanished into the snow. Somewhere in Elara's broken memory is the one thing Vane wants most.

Lucian should hand her to the mind-breakers. Instead he keeps her at Ashgrave Hall, a fortress of snow-lashed windows, dusty libraries and sealed doors, and defies a tribunal to do it. When Elara touches him, he flinches as if burned. When she steals a memory from him, it shows her own face, laughing. Then she finds a vow written in her own hand, and a chapel door with her name carved beneath a light that still breathes.
