Mia Morgan is thirty-one, a trauma surgeon, and the steadiest pair of hands in her hospital. On the night of a multi-car pile-up she works until the very last patient, a child, and saving him costs her everything. For seven minutes, her heart stops.

Death has come for every soul he was ever sent for. He has walked the corridors of her hospital for years, and he has always seen her. This time he does not take her. Lucian, the Angel of Death, is ancient, calm and utterly certain, and he offers Mia a way back that his realm will recognise: a vow, made freely by two willing souls.

So Mia explores his realm, a corridor of a thousand doors, a hall of stopped clocks, a garden where the last words of the dead still whisper and a bridge he spun himself, while a clock counts down how long her body can still be returned. And the Registrar, the Death before him, wants his way back in. Mia is the key.
